Torrevieja cancels the August 15th Summer Parade to avoid gridlock in the town center

The governing team justifies the decision "by citing the high temperatures," the coincidence with the Leiva concert, and the San Roque neighborhood festivities.

The Department of Festivals, in collaboration with the Torrevieja Carnival Association, has decided that the traditional Summer Parade, which was scheduled for August 15th, "will not be part of this year's festival program." According to a press release from the City Council, the parade's cancellation is being referred to as a "reorganization of the August 15th program."

The decision by the Councillor for Festivals, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, according to the brief municipal explanation, is mainly due to "the high temperatures" that are usually recorded "at that time of year", with the aim of "guaranteeing the safety and well-being of both the participants and the attending public".

Coincidence

Added to this is the fact that, on the same night, there is a concert by Leiva as part of the Brilla Torrevieja festival - for which there are practically no tickets left since it was announced - and the celebration of the traditional San Roque festivities, circumstances that entail "a significant security, mobility and coordination of personnel," according to the same sources.

The Torrevieja City Council expressed its gratitude for the understanding shown by residents, community groups, and visitors, reiterating its commitment to continue promoting festive activities that can be carried out under the best possible organizational conditions. The statement did not clarify whether the City Council intends to reinstate this event, which requires a prior contract for its organization and has now been removed from the festival calendar due to the high temperatures, in future years.

The parade has always marked the midpoint of the most complicated month in terms of tourist occupancy in Torrevieja, which awaits this free celebration with guaranteed massive attendance despite knowing the difficulties in parking and getting to the city center during that afternoon.

Traffic

The city council's insistence on holding the same parade last year, this time with a stage on the Vista Alegre promenade, caused a major traffic jam in the city center and created serious problems for drivers trying to leave the urban area. The problems also extended to accessing parking garages in the city center because the parade route occupied the main section of Ramón Gallud Street.

This event features prominently the Carnival troupes, so much so that it's also called the Summer Carnival. Participants include the Salt Festival Court, the Belleas and Ladies of Fire, the Queens of La Mata and the Sacred Heart, and the Carnival Kings. It 's a vibrant parade that the City Council describes every year as "full of color, music, and tradition."

The situation in the city center, which coincides with the areas of greatest tourist influx, adds this summer roads closed due to the ongoing redevelopment works that continue to this day, and the leisure center that is already operational and is already one of the main destinations for visitors, concentrating thousands of people since its opening.
