Ingredients

- 350g penne or other pasta shape
- 60g butter
- 75g plain flour
- 550ml milk
- 110g cooked ham, chopped
- 300g Cheddar, grated
- 125g frozen peas
- 100g fresh or natural breadcrumbs
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6. Cook the pasta following the pack instructions.

2. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring, until the mixture comes away from the side of the pan. Remove from the heat and slowly whisk in the milk. Return to the heat and cook over a low - medium heat until thickened and smooth. Add more milk, if too thick.

3. Add the ham and 200g of the Cheddar to the sauce and stir until the cheese has melted.

4. Drain the pasta and transfer to a large baking dish. Add the cheese sauce and peas. Stir well to coat the pasta.

5. Melt the remaining butter in a small frying pan and toss with the breadcrumbs until coated. Sprinkle over the pasta. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes until bubbling and golden. Season with salt and pepper. Serve straight away.
