I doubt if many people gave much thought about the spread of germs from blowing out candles on a birthday cake until Covid-19 came along. It was a tradition that had been carried out by generations, and as far as I am aware no deaths have ever been linked to the event.

Now, for some reason, I have a picture in my mind of a kid who has failed to blow all his/her candles out on the first attempt, the more times he/she attempts to blow out the stubborn candles - the more frustrated they get - the more the blow turns to a spit plume - to extinguish the candle.

Searching Google, the cake shield has been around for a number of years now but I doubt the manufacturer could have ever envisaged what was to come in 2020.

Maybe it might be worth investing in the cake shields now , especially with covid
Some have made a fortune from PPE , ie hand sanitiser, face masks etc, so this might be the next big earner
Think about how many birthday celebrations there are each day all over the world

I was also thinking of virtual candles using an app, where you blow them out on your phone , or use the phone to extinguish electronic candles on the cake via bluetooth , i am sure some tech wizard will think of something
