Torrevieja Beaches no beach bars until mid July. No sunbeds, watersports

Another year of no sun beds, umbrellas or water sports on Torrevieja beaches and no chiringuitos until at least the middle of July. The Town Hall pulled out all the stops, and all the money it would seem, in employing 152 controllers for the beaches but couldn't get their act together over the past year to issue the adds for those interested in supplying the services. People may recall the present Council blamed the outgoing Council for not having the contracts in place last year. And the excuse this year is...? Time to stop passing the buck Snr Alcalde and see the damage this offhand behaviour is doing to the reputation of the Town as a holiday destination. People expect these basic services nowadays. They are not considered an optional extra or a luxury. People will simply now decamp to Orihuela beaches where all these services are available.

I was going to respond to your post the other day Bee, but have been unable to subscribe through Diario Informacion to read the article so am not sure of its full content so cannot comment specifically.

Generally speaking though I cannot understand when a service is known to be required and is annual service that needs to be provided, that people simply do not think is everything in place or what is required to be in place to contract for that service to be provided.

In the case of beach services provided by any town hall, planning for the following year should commence once the current year finishes.

Unfortunately you can also get complacency where a service has been contracted for 'x' years people simply ignore when it expires as it could be years away, and the first problem they may ever encounter is when they realise it has already expired.

The call for tenders for both the beach bars and the umbrellas, sunbeds and water sports has only been published in today's DOGV

I would have thought that it would be too late now to get anything in place for this Summer. Would anyone actually want the concession ? During a normal Summer there would be plenty of money to be made, but this is not a normal Summer and it is so unpredictable from day-to-day with restrictions being re-introduced in some places.

Not quite sure how it would work on a practical level, would the concession holder be allocated 'x' number of the marked out plots on a beach ?

I doubt it will be in place for this year. At least it should all be ready for next year.

It appears the beach bar contracts have been awarded but it could still be a couple of weeks before they are up and running. They have a 4 year duration.

Well that was awarded quickly !

Must admit I am surprised that whoever won the contract is even considering opening up this year/this time in the season, unless there is some contractual requirement.

Just read on social media that the company awarded the contract have apparently commented that it would not be profitable to setup this late in the season. There also is some administrative issues with the contract which seems to suggest it is not in place.
