A distant memory.

Pubs/ Bars must provide food so that you can sit inside for a drink here Northern Ireland. Difficult you’d think if it’s only a public house and one that doesn’t serve food.

Yesterday, my husband reminded me of an evening when he and a friend went for a drink YEARS ago. In NI, only licensed premises serving food were permitted to open on a Sunday.
They sat down and were shown a very minimal menu offering fish, sausages, pasties, chips etc.,so they both opted for the fish. Within a few minutes their meal was set in front of them presented very nicely. They soon learnt from the Barman that he had gone next door to the chippers and purchased them! Full marks for ingenuity.

This amused me so thought I would share it with you.
Surly someone else has a story, come on, share it

There is a Bar/pub in parkstone, Poole. Was originally a Chinese restaurant got into some difficulty, not sure of the full story, but they kept the take away side of the business going, and I think leased the restaurant part to a couple of guys.
As part of the deal (so I've been led to believe) the bar/pub customers can order a Chinese at the bar and have it delivered to their table.

Well seeing as the 'B' word seems to be in vogue now..

My wife was born in Moneymore and her parents once lived in Magherafelt before moving over to the UK.

On one of our many visits to see mum and dad we always popped into our favourite bar in Magherafelt called Marys.

On my first visit there I approached the bar to get some drinks is and a young Black bartender said to me in a broad N'orn Iron accent .." What about ye .. what'll you'se be having then"...

Because he was Black, I had no pre-subscibed idea on how he would sound, but nevertheless I was slightly taken aback and hoped I hid my surprise well.

Of course after several more visits to Marys we became the best of friends and it was patently obvious that he was born in Northern Ireland so how else would he speak.

It's what's inside that counts not what's on the outside .. My mother was Black as are all my relatives on her side.

My sister is married to a Black man and he is one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.

Okay. Time to get off of my soap box. ;)

Just read your post about”Mary’s” and immediately my husband said, I’ve been in it. Apparently years ago, a crowd of guys headed to the Sperrins. ( mountains) to do some clay pigeon shooting. It was the most horrendous day so they packed up early and made their way to “Mary’s “ for a few hot whiskeys. It’s a well known and popular bar in the area.
Small world.
