Ministry Of Health Guidelines For Beaches

Whilst this area is not yet at the phase when people can occupy the beaches, as opposed to exercising on the beach, the Ministry of Health on Saturday published through the Official State Gazette (BOE) guidelines for the use of beaches when occupancy is allowed.

Some of the guidelines are really common sense like one person using a shower, toilet or footbaths at a time unless requiring personal assistance to do so.

Rented sunloungers must be cleaned and disinefected between changeover of rentees, as must other rented equipment on the beach such as jet skis.

The biggest issue the municipalites are going to face is the maxium capacity permitted on the beaches.

We all recognise the 2 metres social distancing rule, but the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health to calculate the maximum capacity on a beach is that each person occupy's a space of 4 square metres. You could probably get a family of 4 in one 4 square metre area, not just one person, so beach capacity looks like it will be greatly reduced.

Municipalities may also establish time limits on beaches and restrict parking to control beach capacity.

I agree it will be interesting to see what Alicante decide, and so far have not given anything away in their media briefings apart from they are hoping that they will enter Phase 2 on Monday.

There was a meeting held (I assume remotely) by the Generalitat Valenciana and a number of Mayors regarding reopening of the beaches, but the Mayor of Torrevieja was not invited.

Since the Spanish seem unable to occupy spaces on beaches away from other people even when the beach is nearly empty. It will be interesting to see whether they can change what seems to be a natural characteristic.

Torrevieja and Orihuela are not opening the beaches for swimming or sunbathing on Monday. Torrevieja Town Hall seems to be in a bit of a sulk. They said they would need about 80 people to implement the new regs. So if anybody wants a swim on Monday then head to Guardamar beaches as they are not implementing any specific measures but relying on people to observe the distance regs. Guardamar are set to look at introducing new measures in 3 weeks time. Alicante city has marked out areas for sunbathing on the beaches with bollards and an entry exit one-way system. There is an exclusion area at the water's edge for walking only i.e no playing games or sitting or standing around.

For any beachgoers heading to the beaches of Guardamar be advised that smoking and ball games on the beaches are now prohibited as part of the restrictions put in place for their reopening.

Ball games are good idea when it's crowded but why the no smoking rule.

Being a non smoker I find other peoples smoke blowing my face very offensive but with social distancing surely this eases some of the problem.

The no smoking is probably just a hygiene measure. I just hate the way people bury cigarette ends in the sand. We now know the damage they are doing to marine life. There are to be no waste bins either I think so everyone will have to bring their rubbish home. That is going to be a huge chore for people
