Surprised this has not happened sooner. For an airline that is reliant on a quick turnaround, I would imagine it could not have been an easy decision to impose a search at the departure gate.

Why buy in UK when it is a lot cheaper at arrival destination

Although this particular article does not reference it, I think the real issue is people are consuming the duty free alcohol on board.
I guess travellers do not want to pay these prices for smaller quantities:
Whilst the article mentions that the ban has been brought in for "comfort and safety", it should also increase onboard sales of alcohol for Ryanair, whilst at the same time the cabin crew can regulate who/how much they serve to people.
No doubt people will find away to conceal alcohol to get it on board - I think filling an empty water bottle with gin was an old trick one time.

Why only flights to Spain? No mention of other countries in any of the newspapers
How long is it going to take to search 180 odd people and their luggage? Not going to happen!
Usual poor journalism of today
Bit of a different tale here

However, Ryanair has denied banning duty-free alcohol onboard. A Ryanair spokesperson said in a statement: “We are not ‘banning’ or ‘confiscating’ duty free alcohol at boarding gates. As per Ryanair’s T&Cs, passengers can carry duty free alcohol onboard but must not consume it during the flight.”
These people causing the problems are boozed up before they even get on the plane

Wonder what the actual truth is behind this story, which in the end did get widespread coverage. There was no image of the alleged email, but neither have Ryanair denied sending out an email in the above article.Lincoln45 wrote: 16 Jun 2023 14:50 Why only flights to Spain? It is so stressful to fly now, planes that are delayed, queuing , strikes, luggage restrictions, customs, drunks on board etc etc , not to mention the terrorism threat
No wonder people are driving to and from the UK
And you rarely hear of any trouble on boat crossings either , well not as well publicised as when flying if there are incidents
There are a lot of idiots that fly and think they need to fill up to the brim with booze to enjoy themselves , but i think some use alcohol to combat stress , instead of taking valium for example because of the fear of flying
Maybe some take both which might explain their strange behaviour , like one on an indian airline that decided to relieve himself in the aisle , and another recently that tried to open the emergency exit door just prior to landing

Re: Ryanair Bans Carry-On Duty Free Alcohol On UK To Select Spanish Destinations
6 years ago, we flew from Belfast to Alicante with Ryanair ( usually EasyJet). It was full of Stags and Hens. Without doubt, it was the most horrendous flight I’ve ever been on. We were sitting in row 2 as usual and were asked by the Hen party if we’d move to allow them to be together. We agreed and moved to row 12 in front of the emergency seats. The language was shocking, everyone seemed to be drinking from bottles in bags, the noise was shocking. All in all, it was bad until the captain announced that an incident had occurred in Alicantecand we were being diverted to Valencia. We turned around and headed back up the coast and the drunks became drunker. The ‘plane landed in Valencia and had to refuel. The aisle was packed with people queuing to use the toilets. The captain appealed to everyone to get back into their seats so that we could take off. Not a chance! Those that had already used the loo were now queuing again. It was chaotic. The 2 girls behind us were SO DRUNK, they couldn’t get out of their seats and most certainly wouldn’t have been capable of getting themselves out in an emergency let alone others. The stewardess tried to move them but to no avail. Finally, after about 45 minutes the flight took off and we were allowed to land in Alicante finally.
I NEVER book Friday flights and rarely travel with Ryanair. I’ve never seen people openly drinking their own duty free on an EasyJet flight but in fairness, we don’t see much when sitting at the front apart from people queuing for the loo. Thankfully, all sober.
Passengers should never be permitted to get drunk on a flight as it’s dangerous for fellow passengers and crew. Alcohol is fine in moderation and in the right place. More than a couple of drinks on a short haul flight should only be allowed.
