I have heard people use the words 'Spanish Flu' but it was used in conversation as a throw away comment, and never realised the significance of the event.

That was an interesting article which made me turn to Google to find more information.

So it was called 'Spanish Flu' simply because it received greater media attention in Spain, as Spain wasn't involved in WWI and therefore not subject to wartime censorship.

Even after all these years and plenty of theories, no one still knows how, where or why the pandemic started. The only certainty seems to be that up to 90% of the deaths were people under 65, in the 20 - 40 age range. Influenza deaths normally being amongst infants under 2 or adults over 70 because of their weak immune system.
