Recently had to change from bankia to caixa bank and now can't pay for something online as require a digital signature. Has this been the case with anybody else and do you now need a card reader aswell?

TIA

Yes, we were Bankia and we also need a digital signature for almost anything, not just for paying for stuff online. You'll need one for changing passwords etc.
You can apply online for one and it will need to be six digits.

I just put in my Bankia username and password on changeover day and then applied for a digital signature

When you went on Bankia online just before the changeover, you were automatically transferred to Caixabank online so on changeover day you logged in as normal. I didn't have a digital signature with Bankia.

Strange question brandboy but do you think that caixa bank are or will be better than bankia as most reviews seem favourable even for spanish banks 😁😁

I never had a problem with Bankia and their website was much more user friendly than Caixabank's.
But we only use the bank to pay our utility bills and any bank can do that.

We were with Bankia and, having joined them in 2018 and using their Cuenta On account offering free banking to non residents, we were happy with the service until February 2020.

Then they started charging 5€ a month. I emailed them to ask why and was told we needed to sign up for notifications to avoid the charges. I tried to sign up online but failed. Emailed them again and was told I needed to come in to the branch to do it!

So with Covid restrictions we didn’t get to the branch until September 2021 where we managed to sort out the notification issue a couple of months prior to the La Caixa takeover. I did clarify that free banking would be available after the takeover and was told it would be.

We had free banking for November and December and then in January 2022 a charge of 35€ appears on the account!!

No matter what my “personal banker” told us, trying to allay our concerns, it transpires I could never trust them.

In the end, I contacted our fiscal advisers and asked them if they could close the account forthwith and in the meantime I opened an account with Wise. That took no longer than 10 days to complete the shutdown at La Caixa and transfer the few direct debits and standing orders as well as the final balance to our Wise account. DDs for the electric and water have been paid ok so fingers crossed it all works out.
