At long last the Friday market in Torrevieja will reopen this week with 125 stalls (25% of usual capacity) selling food and hygiene products only.

The wearing of masks by sellers and shoppers is mandatory, and hand gel will be available at the market entrance. As expected social distancing measures will be in place and rules/recommendations to be observed whilst in the market will be clearly displayed at the entrance.

Line H of the Torrevieja bus service will also be running with stops adjacent to the market site on Avenida Delfina Viudes.

Entrance to the market will be manned by both Policia Local and Civil Protection volunteers, to control capacity and maintain security.

Good to see they have finally opened it although a bit sparse on stalls.

It is difficult for both the traders and councils. Is it cost effective for traders and councils to reopen a market that is greatly reduced in size ? I think to some extent reopening will be seen by some as the beginning of return to some sort of normality and obviously you have to start somewhere, but will a market with a reduced number of stalls attract the public ?

The markets under the control of Orihuela Council have now been running for a week, and the attendance by the public at those on the Orihuela Costa have reportedly been poor, but I am sure it will be hard to attribute the low attendance to one single reason - is it the lack of stalls, reduced population on the coast as people have remained in their home countries due to coronavirus or possibly reluctance by some to go to an event such as a market that would normally attract large numbers of people ?

One thing is for certain, things can only start to improve going forward.

Did any of our members go to the Friday market ?
I'm just curious, as to how it went , given the restrictions.

Yes - looks busy enough , given the reduction of stalls allowed .

Looking at the photos the Mayor did not seem like he was practicising social distancing of 2 metres.
