Carrying a spare bulb kit
Carrying a spare bulb kit
I was looking online for spare bulb kit for my peugeot and was surprised to see i could only find packs of two, mainly for the headlamps which are extremely expensive or individual packs for others like side lights etc
I thought it was still compulsory to carry a spare set, but apparently not any more , it is optional
I then realised the probable reason why, most modern cars are notoriously difficult to change a bulb, especially inside a headlamp, unless you are lucky and your model is easy, , and if halfway up a mountainside in the pitch black even more so
I suspect unless you have fair diy skills you would just take your car to a garage and get them to do it for you

Re: Carrying a spare bulb kit
At one time a headlight bulb cost 50p
Now you might have to change the whole unit.. cost 50 quid.
That's progress..

You are not just judged by the company you keep, but the company you keep away from.

Yes C, they make everything so expensive to replace nowadayscrummy wrote: 15 Jun 2024 16:50 At one time a headlight bulb cost 50p

I got a fluid injection kit with the peugeot instead of a spare wheel , so was looking how much a spacesaver wheel would cost as i plan to do a lot of travelling , it wouldn't be any good if the tyre wall ripped, , and you wouldn't get much change from 200 euros !!
My old kia had a spare tyre in the well and i did have to use that once when somebody pierced the side of my tyre while at the supermarket , i think it was a a ruse to get me to stop there to steal from me , but i managed to drive home to change it
Re: Carrying a spare bulb kit
I had a Ford Focus estate here for 15 years and not once did I need to change a bulb.
Re: Carrying a spare bulb kit
I think bulbs were made to last then B,as were the cars, plus most cars have daytime lights now so are on not just at nightBrandyboy wrote: 15 Jun 2024 17:50 I had a Ford Focus estate here for 15 years and not once did I need to change a bulb.
Re: Carrying a spare bulb kit
Just an additional point about headlight bulbs
I have a bit of calcium type build up on one edge of my left headlight lens which is polycarbonate
I have tried everything to remove it , lemon, bicarbonate of soda toothpaste etc, and other home remedies with limited success, i just have a special renovation paste to try that arrived today .Replacing the cover is a big job as the lens is fixed to the headlight with a special adhesive and the whole light needs removing from the car to do this , and not sticking it back in place properly can cause water and moisture ingress , its easier to replace the whole unit
Anyway while researching the problem someone made a good point, the hotter the headlamp bulb ,you can buy some very powerful bulbs nowadays, the more damage you will have to the plastic lens over time, so it is not just the sun you need to worry about its also internal heat

What causes the plastic on modern cars' headlight covers to turn yellow after a few years?
Some of the bulbs like halogens burn extremely hot.

Re: Carrying a spare bulb kit
Yellowing internally is something which may or may not happen but the vast majority of external degradation is due to UV destroying the plastic.
On an old Ford Focus I had the deterioration was that bad the I had to start with 80 grit sandpaper and work up from that. Took an age and not little courage to attack them like that but it was the only way.

I spent a good hour today applying the renovation paste to the headlight and it only made a slight difference
