I dont think thats correct Jimmy.
I went in 1970, Hendrix was top of the bill. I was there for 7 days and all 5 days of the festival itself and saw the fences being built and then torn down.
My ticket for the 5 days was £5.
The first festival was in 1969 with Dylan topping the bill.
I make that 51 years since the first.
Best acts for me were John B Seastian, Family and Hendrix.
A great experience but not as good as the June festival at Shepton Mallet or the May festival at Keele both if which were more of what festivals were about. 5 days led to listening to many poor or pretentious or overated acts being used to fill in the time. Groups overran and meant some top acts coming on stage halfway through night and being missed by sleepers.

I think that Dylan topped the bill at a festival in 1968 held at Kempton Park, Sunbury on Thames. I was furious with my parents at the time as we only lived 3 miles away and they wouldn't let me go!! Mind you I had just turned 15 at the time..... I knew it would be no good asking if I could go to the Isle of Wight one the next year. Never did get to go to one.

The very first festival was on 31 August - 1 September 1968 with Jefferson Airplane headlining with T-Rex, The Move, Arthur Brown and the Pretty Things as support. I forget who else as I was stoned most of the time. !! .. I also went in 1969 and 1970.
In 1970 I met Micky Most when I was playing in my own band and after hearing us play agreed to give us a contract with Decca but we heard no more
So it's 52 years old.

Thanks for correcting me Jimbo, i will change the post title, i am so envious hearing you and jamesB were there
I watched the 1970 you tube video and somes others relating to the same and it was riveting, the who and free amongst my favourite
The drum solo by clive bunker of jethro tull was a highlight for me , i think i appreciate listening to their music more now than when younger, having had only the aqualung album. Saying that keith moon was good too , looking a bit saner than before the drugs took hold, but a great drummer nethertheless
I will have an another look later for some more hendrix performances as the one i watched didnt show him

If you look at the Radio 2 listings for today Johnnie Walker is looking back at the 50th anniversary of the IOW festival

All bombard him and tell him he is wrong

I saw Tyrannosaurus Rex back that time Marc with Steve Peregine Took (think that was his name) before Marc did glam rock (yuk).

Poor research. Looks like Johnnie Walker has had too much Johnnie Walker.

Never was a fan of Glam Rock Jimbo. Thigh length boots and big hair never suited me, unless it was on a young rock chick.
I remember Steve Took and may have met him .. He died at the young age of 31 and at the time it was thought to be because of drugs.
