I never condone violence but tearing down a statue which pays homage to a slaver means nothing to me...it shouldn't have been there in the first place IMHO.

The point is that history hasnt changed nor should it.
Churchill, Nelson, Washington etc are historical figures of importance to their countries and as a whole benefited their homeland. And as such we need to be aware of them and teach our children and not expunge them from future generations education or learning.
Totally agree with you, we cannot change history nor should we try to bury it but i don't think paying homage to a white slave trader by erecting a statue to them is the way to go.
However what is banning gone with the wind going to acheive. It is a story representive of the era it portrays, it is wrong to pretend it never happened just because slavery is portrayed.
Yep ridiculous it portrays very accurately the life of blacks in the USA in that era.
Think of all films made about civil war or WW11. Should they all be banned for racism, to blacks, Jews, Slavs. Or is the UK only concerned with black racism.
Racism isn't confined to the blacks as well you know,look at how the Jews have suffered and look (for example) at the furore aimed at the Labour party for being anti semitic....do you see the same outrage when racism against the blacks comes to the fore?..of course not you get idiots on here...and i am paraphrasing saying he deserves what he got cos he wase a felon, a druggie no one who has any sense can deny that the blacks have suffered immeasurably at the hands of white people and things need to change.
Where does it end. Destroy the Colesseum in Rome because Italians threw slaves to the lions there.
The Colesseum does not pay homage to any individual same as the prison on Robyn island...which is left as a stark reminder of how inhuman people can be.

History remains, good and bad. Putting 2020 values onto somebody who lived in 1720 is wrong. Education is key.
Agreed all forms of censorship is wrong i don't think pulling down statues is the way to go however i do get peoples anger and frustration.

Banning of comedy shows is also wrong because of white man blacking up, not for racism but for comedic effect (Ali G, Matt Lucas), just like Godfrey Cambridge or Eddie Murphy have done the other way round, but they arent banned.

You'll find that it isn't black people that are calling for them to be banned...more like the luvvies who wish to be the industry's moral compass.

If you read, i have agreed with you about the slave trader statue but questioning where the line stops. The Colesseum does not represent one man as you say, but it is a symbol of what was done to slaves and across the road at the forum there are plenty of statues representing slave traders.

Now its Baden Powell they want removing. I dont know his history other than the scout movement, which I suspect is all most people know.

Besides you are trying to bait the wrong person here, i suffered racism for nearly 30 years, as one of the few english people working in an all welsh industry in north wales
It may not have been because of the colour of my skin, but it was geographical racism, and believe me they made me suffer and unwelcome
It did get easier as the years went on and i came out of it with a skin like a rhino
So unless you suffered years of racial abuse yourself i would ask you to not try to analyse me and make assumptions based on a post on a forum

Fortunately i have never suffered racial abuse but have witnessed it first hand on many many occasions,i feel i've done my bit ,i have employed a number of black people a number of muslim people as well as poles and english iam not trying to analyse you as i said you are irrelevent to me,and to answer your very last sentence isn't that what you have done with me by your own admission following postings from GK funny old world innit..
