Car failed its itv because of the cat. The scrap yard replacement rattles like a bag of nails after two weeks. Looking for a reconditioned one with a guarantee.

If you do need a new one with a guarantee then plenty on ebay.de or ebay.es sites

This may be a silly question but can a catalytic converter be re-conditioned? They are full of expensive precious metals. The item that Karen obtained from a scrap yard was exactly that - a scrap item.

As Freddo suggests (and I did too in my original post) ask a qualified & sensible mechanic for help. Don´t waste your money buying rubbish, in the long run it is just not worth it.

They do have a scrap value because of the metals in them.

A lot of problems with these cats is because the engines have not been pushed hard enough. Most people just poodle about in their cars, they need to have a good hard run to get the cat very hot, when it'll do a regen and blast the muck out.

Advice for anybody taking their car for ITV, blast it up the motorway before presenting it for the test.

Go back to the reputable garage and complain that the cat fitted was not fit for purpose.

That's mean. He thought he was doing me a favour. I doubt sacral part have a guarantee

Who suggested a second hand part?
If it was the mechanic then go back to them

I agree that a scrap part will not have a guarantee, But the fitted item should have been fit for purpose ie last more than 2 weeks. In my opinion you have the right to go back and get it sorted.

Your original question was about obtaining a reconditioned cat. Is there such a thing? Does anyone know?

By the way, my neighbour had the same problem last year. His Mazda car failed the emissions test at the ITV. He took it to a local garage who diagnosed that it needed a new cat. They then sourced a new one from England because it was cheaper, even with shipping costs, than obtaining one from Mazda España,

I have found a supplier in the uk. Second hand Ford part, guaranteed. 183 euro. Not bad. I was quoted 75 euro to fit but from watching the mechanic it took minute s or am I bring mean!
