Would never even have considered a link between 'nitty gritty' and slavery. I wonder what other phrases will become not politically correct.

Taken from the article..
" There is no evidence linking the term to slavery in the first printed examples found of its use."
If that is so why is the stupid Sky Sports advising people not to say ' Nitty Gritty' !!

But the article also says, "its use is banned in some institutions such as the police force." So why did they ban it ?JamesB wrote: 02 Jul 2020 12:59 Taken from the article..

Re: Use Of The Phrase 'Nitty Gritty'
Someone must have found this reference to the word looking for things to ban
Nitty gritty is thought to have originated in a term used by slave traders to refer either to the women or to the remains at the bottom of the transport ships that were covered in lice and grit.Jun 8, 2003

There must be thousands of phrases of dubious origin.
If you look hard enough for dirt, then you`ll find some.

Master bedroom
Estate agents across the UK are banning the use of the term master bedroom due to its links with slavery and sexism.

Re: Use Of The Phrase 'Nitty Gritty'
All of this hysteria is utter madness. It reminds me of Christmas. Some years ago my daughter told me that they were no longer allowed to put Christmas decorations up in their office as it was offensive to non Christians.
My neighbour, Indian and a Hindu sends Christmas cards to everyone. Jewish people also send Christmas cards as do many other cultures. It is synonymous with a joyful time of the year and most people are perfectly happy to celebrate or recognise it a the season of good will.
Now, we are no longer to call the largest bedroom in the house as the master .... it could insult someone! Utter nonsense. The master bedroom is where the master of the house sleeps ( of course, the wife may very well be the master) In Spain I believe it is known as the matrimonial bedroom. Soon, that will have to change too as many people are no longer getting married so they too could be offended!
Why don’t we ask the people that we think we are offending for their honest opinion on the subject. They probably don’t care less.
The famous hymn “AMAZING GRACE” was written by a man who was originally a slave trader. Sailing across the broad Atlantic, his ship hit a terrible storm and it was bartered and thrown through the sea like a rag doll off the coast of Donegal, Ireland. John Newton called out to God for mercy. This moment marked his spiritual conversion but he continued slave trading for another 9 years. As you probably know, he was ordained into the Church of England and became an Anglican priest Do you think there will be a call to forbid the singing of this famous hymn? Good luck to them but I will continue to love it.
