They have removed all the sign coverings and laid down yellow road markings. Are they about to start the roundabout works, or are they just messing with the motorists? :Whistling:

I suspect that they are about to start the roundabout works - this week or next, maybe?

It would appear that they are starting on this roundabout. The cycle / footpath has been closed off, and they are ripping the tarmac up.

Over the summer there was several articles published in the Spanish media about DGT/Traffico installing new radars in roadworks. I would imagine that this site in Torrevieja would be an attractive opportunity for DGT/Traffico, especially if drivers have been lulled into a false sense of security that the only speed camera on the CV905 is the fixed one installed between the El Chaparral and La Siesta roundabouts.

This is one element, from one of those articles.

The new DGT radars: velolaser (invisible radars)

Velolaser radars are very discreet mobile devices that can be placed almost anywhere. Now, the DGT is using a "camouflage" technique, which consists of hiding the new velolaser radars in elements within roadworks. This is because many drivers do not respect speed restrictions in construction zones, which increases the risk of accidents. The "velolasers" or "invisible radars" are so discreet that they go unnoticed. They can detect speeds of up to 250 km/h and change location without warning, operating with a five-hour autonomy and remote control via Wi-Fi. Impressive, right?

Velolaser radars are usually placed in vehicles of the traffic authorities or hidden in signs, beacons, fences or different elements within a construction site. They are very precise: they detect violations up to three times per second with a margin of error of only 2 km/h.

Quite often mid-morning on a Sunday, an unmarked silver vehicle is parked up behind the crash barrier, under the bridge, facing the Los Montesinos direction. Coming from Quesada, people probably would not notice that it is even there because of the double barrier height, and the colour of the car matches the crash barrier. Coming from the Los Montesinos direction the car is more obvious, although you probably assume it has broken down or been abandoned. The vehicle has colour coded bumpers, but the front bumper has a very visable black square where a colour coded bumper panel has been removed to reveal the camera hidden beneath.

A lot of drivers seem to ignore the one on CV905.

In France, they have them fitted to private vehicles, who get paid. French version of the Stasi. They also have cameras at major junctions which can cover 8 lanes of traffic and work out if you've made an illegal turn and if you are in the correct lane for the size of your vehicle.

Meanwhile in the UK, they have an hand held radar/camera which can clock you from over a kilometre away. The courts in their wisdom have limited this to 750 metres.

I see the day coming when you get in your car and the whole journey will be recorded and their won't be any need for radar traps. Their is a form of this happening in the USA with GM motors who have been downloading info from the vehicles and selling it to the insurance companies.

Same vehicle was parked up at 10ish this morning on the CV905 at Quesada next to building in link facing direction of Torrevieja, with the front and driver's side window covered with sun shade.
