UK politics aside but many consider Elgins action as 'vandalism or looting', alhough Elgin stated he removed the sculptures with permission of the Ottoman officials who were in authority in Athens at the time. A claim that has always been disputed.

There's fors and against for returning the Marbles, and one of Elgins claims, apart from saying that he had permission to take them is that he saved them certain destruction.

Yes, a difficult thing to sort out. I believe they were saved from destruction but my gut says they should be restored to Greece. However, if the British Museum returned all the exhibits from around the world it would soon be empty.

The politics of this is not good.

I see Timbo has joined in digging at this forum....can't people be a member of more than one forum?...why does it have to be this one or that one?....his way of keeping a lid on the nest of vipers is to ban anyone who disagrees with them....it's like protecting a fat ginger schoolboy from the good looking popular ones.

Bringing truth to the saying, simple things please simple minds while bigger fools watch on.

Anyway back to the Elgin Marbles. I think they should be returned.
