Roundabout diagram from Trafico

I find that the diagram from Trafico on how to exit the inside lane i.e left-hand lane on a roundabout is alien to me. There is a purple car in the link doing a roundabout manouvre which would be normal to UK/Irish drivers which Trafico says is incorrect. It appears in Spain you can only exit a roundabout from the outside lane and you are supposed to keep going round and round until you can get into the outside lane. Which begs the question why have 2 or 3 lanes entering and exiting a roundabout and why bother with the old " driver already on the roundabout has priority".

I think you have your lanes mixed up. the inside lane in Spain is the one nearest the kerb ,the outside lane is the one nearest to the centre of the road IE the left

They say that the golden rule is always to exit the roundabout from the right hand lane. You must never cut across lanes to exit. You must get yourself in the right hand lane before your turn off. The following video explains it a bit better and also shows you a roundabout that has been laid straight to further illustrate the correct lane to exit.

Spanish drivers do not see it that way...they believe if you are not taking the first exit, you must get into the left hand lane, and as you approach the exit you want....you swoop across and enter the exit in its left hand lane.
They expect anybody in the right hand lane to also take that same exit, but stay in its right hand lane!

If you are that person in the right hand lane but are not planning to use that exit..... then Good Luck!!!!

Yes Fred I should have said outside i.e left and inside right. The article mentions the Swindon Magic Roundabout and how the traffic flows freely. Yes well it would go nowhere if everyone could only exit into the one lane, left in our case, as per the Spanish rule. I can only conclude the safest thing to do in Spain is stay in the right-hand lane going into the roundabout and stay in it even if you are going all around the roundabout.

No wonder there are regularly tailbacks at roundabouts on dual carriageways where the majority of cars simply want to go straight across. In fact it also explains why so many stick in the right-lane and go around on the outside even if they're turning left, or going all the way round. They might as well get rid of the two lanes and have dual carriageways that narrow down to one lane, with one-lane roundabouts!

Wherever you are on the roundabout....whichever lane you are in, ....the Golden Rule is...

Always keep looking over your left shoulder, and always be prepared for someone to swoop across you into the exit!!
